Energy drinks have become a dominant force, not only in terms of consumption but in terms of economic impact in the US. Red Bull for instance, considered the most popular of all energy drinks, began in Austria in 1987 and was released in the US in 1997. Since its introduction in our country, the product doubled it's sales each year and topped $1 Billion by the year 2000. Yes, that's right Billion with a "B".
The United states has long been a huge consumer of caffinated beverages - coffee, coca-cola and Mountain Dew have been staples for years. But the new energy drinks are specifically advertising to attract teen-agers and young adults. By sponsoring events such as the X-games, these drinks position themselves to be thought of as something that "enhances" athletic performance.
Energy drinks often tout the fact that they contain nutrients such as B-vitamins but what's really in them? Did you know that a 12 oz can of Mountain Dew has around 30mg of caffiene while a 9 oz can of Red Bull has around 80mg of caffiene. Energy drinks are also loaded with sugar which can be a stimulant but like caffiene, but can lead to an inevitable energy crash.
Bottom line is this... if you have a teen-ager who is drinking soda, energy drinks or coffee to stay awake, they are on a course that can lead to caffiene addiction, high blood pressure and diabetes. Teenagers need their sleep. As importantly, they need proper nutrition. A well balanced diet with fruits and vegetables will give a body the appropriate amount of B-vitamins as well as a host of other nutrients needed for muscle growth and development.
Finally, caffinated beverages are known to dehydrate the body and literally leech calcium from the bones leading to early onset osteoporosis and softening of the bones. Energy drinks can especially be dangerous after a sporting event because the caffiene leads to prolonged dehydration and can lead to heart palpatations and arhythmia.
Next time your teenager reaches for a "quick pick-me-up" give it a second thought.

Monster, 180, Rockstar, Red Bull... Whatever you want to call them, energy drinks have become a new mainstay in our culture. I was watching a televised sporting event last night and noticed that an energy drink was the lead sponsor for the athletes and dominated the commercials between the events as well.
